Often, mold growth is the result of high humidity and moisture levels, dampness, flooding, leaks, and poor air circulation.

Air Quality Testing: Our mold technician will take an air sample from the room. The sample will be sent to an accredited lab and the results will reveal exactly the type of mold spores present in your space and in what concentrations. You will receive a report of the results and our professional recommendation regarding how to proceed.

Professional Mold Remediation: Mold remediation is the removal or clean-up of mold from contaminated areas or materials. Mold allergies can sometimes even include rashes, itchy eyes, nose bleeds, headaches, breathing difficulties. People with weak immune symptoms are more susceptible to household mold growth. Sometimes people take it upon themselves to clean up the black mold that they’ve found. However, sometimes after doing this people notice they are much sicker than they were before trying to remove the mold.

A Visual Inspection

Inspection includes asking the client questions regarding the history of the home, searching the home for any possible breaches where moisture issues could occur, observing air flow patterns, inspecting windows and HVAC system, inspecting materials used in the building such as under sinks, attics, walls, carpets, flooring, out door siding, flashing, and eaves systems and more.

Air Testing for Mold

If mold has not been found upon the visual inspection process, then the client and inspector may decide to do indoor air mold testing. This will determine the level of indoor mold spore concentrations, provide a list of spore types, and individual levels of concentrations of spore types such as Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Penicillium and Aspergillus types as well as several others. Minimum of Two samples must be taken, one outside of the building, which is an outdoor control sample to determine the mold types and concentrations in the air, and another in the suspect area of the home. The additional outdoor control sample is also used to determine if there is an indoor mold growth source.

Tape Testing for Mold

Mold growth may occur on the surface of materials. A tape lift is often used for surface sampling by stripping the suspect area surface with specially designed clear tape. The sample is then transferred to a microscope slide and then placed in a sealed tight container and transported to a laboratory for complete analysis.

Swab Testing for Mold

This type of testing is normally done were visible mold is found to determine the type of fungi. The results of this testing will determine if the mold present in this area is toxic or non-toxic. If visible mold is found in more than one location on the property, a swab test must be done at each location. Laboratory results will determine the type of microbial growth that is present.

Trends – an interesting term used for the general direction in which something is developing or changing.  The origin of the word stems from “to revolve, rotate or turn”, and how true this meaning becomes as we watch the decades of fashion and interior design develop.  The old saying “what goes around comes around” rang true this year as I walked the recent Highpoint Furniture Tradeshow in North Carolina.

Little has changed from the previous year which means trends succeeded last year and are here to stay for a while. This trend remained strong – a reclaimed, reused, distressed, recycled, worn, rubbed, aged, and rustic approach to furniture.  Some pieces can be sophisticated and delicate in style and shape, while others are rough, chunky, and hefty in size.

Louise the XV and XVI continued to reign throughout the market as royal styles of furniture truly capture the washed, reclaimed look.  Details like spindled or carved legs on credenzas, console tables, writing desks, and chairs accentuate the French theme along with weathered woods and upholstery wrapped in light beige and grey toned linen.

When I mention the popular furniture maker Restoration Hardware, clients suddenly understand the aged and weathered look – a recent client called it the “anthropology look”.  Urban Industrial comes to mind for those with a more contemporary or modern taste for style.  Unique hand-painted chests, accent tables, and consoles of various lengths each have their own unique scars with chips on the edge, dings in the middle, and a mix of colours showing through from a number of previous paint jobs.  It is the look of having “been there”, furniture that comes with a history and stories to tell – yesteryear now at its best.

Reclaimed wood is perfect for the eco-friendly conscious lifestyle and is readily available in both genuine and reproduction.  If you are in the market for a genuine reclaimed piece, be prepared to pay a premium for these unique pieces that are indeed worth the investment.  Here we find trestle tables made from the solid beams of Southern Plantation era homes, cabinets made from window panes and tin ceiling pieces, and reused stair newels and door hinges make up the very unique and beautiful array of furniture available on the market.  While these pieces tend to be larger in size and rougher in finish, they remain beautiful and solid.

We also see classic chesterfields creating buzz yet again this year.  Keeping with tradition these pieces are completely tufted with large rolled arms and a low back, wrapped in natural linen, and outlined with shoe nails.  Its companion, the cigar chair, creates an aviator bomber jacket feel when covered in pull-up leather. Occasional table styles that work well with this theme include reproduced leather trunks with lids and leather handles and wrought iron/antique wood pieces.  Wrought iron, when mixed with crystal, can spread a magnificent warm light over the scene.

While reclaimed furniture remains popular in the contemporary world, retro is still the go-to for the ultra cool. Even though the look has been popular for years now, it is still considered to be in its prime by many.  Styles that I remember my mom once having in the 60s and 70s have become today’s must have.  Low coffee tables and entertainment pieces with smooth finishes and thin legs are shown in lighter teak-like finishes.

Tangerine Tango was named colour of the year by Pantone which has encouraged the presence of orange in various degrees.  Versions of the “safer” orange tones range from copper and fall harvest to the fiery sunset palettes.   Vivid turquoise mixed with luscious creams and purple in varying tones were showcased in accessories as well as the main focal pieces.

As we move into accessories, the more elaborate and patterned the better. Oversized graphic elements on upholstery, bedding, and wallpaper have made a huge comeback, as well as paisley on dining room chairs, sofas, and barstools. When tied in with the medium warm brown hues of reclaimed wood, this look becomes very warm and inviting.

Mirrors, whether on furniture, walls, or backsplashes, has been on the market for a while now and still shines with pride. The larger the wall mirror, the better.  More light reflected into a room marks the look of modern design.  Swarovski crystals or silver details can too mimic the mirrored feel of glamour and a touch of drama.

Covered ottomans of all  shapes, sizes, and colours can create the perfect accessory when wedged under  console tables, in front of sofas as cocktail tables, or at the foot of your bed.  Create a focal point for your room with a bold printed poof ottoman, or try a super large leather tufted ottoman to create a library setting.

Area floor rugs have made a comeback thanks to the return of the hardwood floor, and with this return come choice: from washed, faded, antique reproductions to bright, dyed cowhides.  Shags are still on the scene in various lengths and colours and rugs in geometric designs compliment any style of room.

And finally, chandeliers are huge – and I mean huge in every form of the word.  Birdcages converted to chandeliers, metal chandelier spheres, spindling arm chandeliers, crystal chandeliers – the list goes on and on!

The decorating trends of 2012 truly give you the option to reclaim your home’s look.  Something old is definitely something new.  One word describes it all – eclectic.  If everything matches in your home, it might just be time for an update!
